Australia is known as the 'lucky country' due to its high quality of living. With beautiful weather, breathtaking landmarks, clean air and a great health and education system our reputation with the rest of the world speaks for itself. Australia is a democratic government with low inflation and low interests rates. It is the only nation to govern an entire continent, the sixth largest country and the largest island in the world.
Culture
The country is well known for its multi-cultural diversity. It's a nation built proudly by people from many backgrounds and respects the rights of all to express and share their individual heritage. While it is an English speaking country over 4.1 million people speak a second language.
The Australian arts and cultural activities have the reputation of being full of energy and originality. Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders first attracted the country attention and we continue to make our mark with unique artworks, music, dance and theatre.
Indigenous Australians
Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders made up all the people of Australia before the arrival of European settlers in 1788. They formed many groups with their lifestyle, religious and cultural traditions reflecting a deep connection with the land. They spoke one or more of hundreds of languages. Now, they make up only a small part of the total number of Australians. They continue to live in all places including cities, towns, the coast, rural areas and the outback. There is no single culture but a mixture of current day and traditional thoughts, ways and practices.
Language
In Australia over 200 different languages and dialects are spoken, including 45 indigenous languages. The most commonly spoken languages (other than English) are Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese and Mandarin.
Weather and Climate
In Australia, because it is such a large country, its weather varies significantly in different parts of the continent. The climatic zones range from deserts to snow-capped mountains; from tropical rainforests to cool climate forests. Living in Australia can involve everything from sunbathing on the beach in scorching summers to knocking snow off your boots after a day of skiing.
Like all countries in the southern hemisphere (the hemisphere south of the Equator), Australia's seasons follow the sequence:
- Summer: December to February
- Autumn: March to May
- Winter: June to August
- Spring: September to November
Australia experiences many of nature's more extreme phenomena, including floods, droughts and bushfires. Some regions also experience storms and tropical cyclones.
Housing
The majority of the Australian population, over 75%, live in cities built on 25,760km of coastline taking advantage of some of the best beaches in the world. Australia is unique in the fact you can live in the hub of the city or less than an hour away and experience the country life.
The rest of the Australian population live in our regional areas ensuring our agricultural industry is still one of the largest exporters in the world.
There is wide choice of different housing types so overseas people can always find something that caters to their lifestyle needs, including:
- suburban lifestyle close to the action
- homes in the hills with breathtaking views
- small farms only an hours drive from the city
- high-end living in beautiful estates and mansions
- apartment living for those that don't care for our famous gardens
If a person is not a permanent resident of Australia they are required to get permission from the Foreign Investment Review Board before they can purchase a home. While there are a few differences that apply to sponsored workers, in general the rights and obligations when renting or buying a home is the same for everyone.
Schools
Australia has a public and private school system that any child can access. Overseas candidates interested in relocating to Australia are encouraged to research the school system prior to their arrival so they can prepare and arrange any school reports and other documentation required for enrolment.
The Australian Government provides the following Education Websites for each Stat and Territory.

Everyone in Australia has the right to share in and enjoy the Australian lifestyle. This includes the right to work and earn wealth. The government sets laws on wages and work conditions. The laws ensure a fair and just work life.
The Australian economy has experienced strong growth in recent years producing a high-growth, low-inflation economy. Although the country has many highly skilled workers, nearly half with university or trade qualifications, our booming economy has placed pressure on the workforce.
Resources Industry
In Australia there is a huge and growing demand on our natural resources. The country currently has a large number of mining, petroleum and mineral processing projects already underway with many new projects planned for the future. Although most of Australia's minerals are close to the surface we have both open-pit and underground minesites and onshore and offshore oil & gas operations.
Australia’s natural resources include:
Coal, iron ore, copper, tin, gold, silver, uranium, nickel, lead, bauxite, tungsten, mineral sands, zinc, diamonds, natural gas, petroleum.
Western Australia (WA) is one of the most productive and diversified mineral and petroleum regions in the world. It is the powerhouse of the resources industry not only in Australia, but for the Asia-Pacific region as a whole.
The State current hosts 560 commercial mineral projects, embracing 1,222 operating mine sites (open pit, underground mines and quarries), plus 171 processing plants as well as 67 operating oil and gas fields. Even with all this activity, WA remains under-explored and warrants considerable follow-up investigation by geoscientists. There is also enormous potential for the development of petrochemical and other world-scaled downstream processing industries using WA's vast uncommitted gas reserves as an input.
To see a map of Western Australia's current and future resource projects refer to the Overseas Candidate Resources list.
Health Industry
Australia’s strong economy and demand for the countries natural resources has resulted in people shortages across all industry sectors, including health and medical care, and community services.
The sponsorship of overseas skilled medical practitioners, registered nurses, allied health specialists and community service workers is one strategy the Australian government and industry are focused on. Attracting health professionals to work in Australia benefits the whole country with an increase in practicing health workers and the introduction of new skills and medical contributions to the sector.
An overseas Medical Practitioner must meet certain requirements before applying for sponsorship:
- Qualifications are assessed and accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC)
- They register with the Medical Board in the state they will practice in
- They register with the Health Insurance Commission (HIC) for a Medicare Provider Number
